Professor Ian A Pearce

Professor Pearce is Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon at St Paul’s Eye Unit, Royal Liverpool University Hospital providing specialist services for AMD, Vitreo-Retinal surgery, Diabetic Eye Disease, Uveitis and Cataract surgery. He is Director of Northwest Eyecare Consultancy Ltd and provides private specialist ophthalmic care from Spire Liverpool Hospital. 


He has been principal/chief investigator for numerous international and national trials of novel treatments and therapies for retinal diseases such as intravitreal injections of Ozurdex, Lucentis, Eylea, Avastin and Ocriplasmin (Jetrea) and surgical management of AMD involving radiotherapy.

He is Director of the Clinical Eye Research Centre at St Paul’s Eye Unit and member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Professional Standards Committee. He represents the RCOPHTH at the DVLA Visual Standards Panel. 


He is a nominated Specialist Clinical Expert Advisor to NICE for the appraisal of novel technologies including Lucentis, Eylea, Ozurdex , Ocriplasmin (Jetrea) and intraocular radiotherapy. For the Department of Health he is chair of the Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens TSE Ophthalmic Sub-group.

Professor Pearce is Honorary Professor in the Dept of Eye and Vision Science at the University of Liverpool  as well as delivering numerous invited international and national lectures. He has authored 3 National Guidelines, 3 Book Chapters ( Evidenced-based Management of Diabetes, Complications of Vitreo-retinal Surgery, Barton and Powers Clinical Negligence) and over 60 publications cited >1000 times.

He has trained many UK and international retinal specialists through St Paul’s Eye Unit fellowship programmes, is Regional Advisor for Ophthalmology to Mersey Training Deanery, Mersey Deanery Programme Director for Medical Ophthalmology and examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.

Diabetic Eye Disease

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) and Diabetic Macular Oedema (DMO) are complications of diabetes, caused by high blood sugar levels damaging the back of the eye (retina). The can cause significant visual loss if left undiagnosed and untreated.

Professor Pearce has been involved in numerous global trials investigating the most effective ways of treating both DR and DMO.

He provides a one-stop clinic for diagnosis, imaging, monitoring and treating of  these conditions.

Macular Surgery

Professor Pearce is a Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon with more than 20 years experiencing providing first class surgery for both macular hole repair and epiretinal membrane (macular pucker) removal. Through the fellowship program at St Paul's Eye Unit he has trained numerous national and international experts in these surgical techniques.

He has full facilities for diagnosis, imaging and monitoring of macular disorders and can offer vitrectomy surgery under local or general anaesthesia as a daycase procedure if required.
